Parents/guardians:
This Month’s we will read and study the novel “The
Outsiders.” The main theme will be
social divide, as this is a story of two groups, one rich and one poor. It is
also a story of friendship, loyalty and love between brothers and friends.
Please assist your
child with today’s homework. There are three options listed below. Your child
is to choose one option question/task.
Each tasks relates to what we learned and discussed in class.

Read Pages (182-186)
Today we learned about the author. Why the author used
initials instead of full name. We also learned about what inspired the author
to write the story.
Option 1:
Write a paragraph in which you summarize what we learned
today about the author. Discuss why she used her initials instead of her full
name? Where did she get the idea for
writing the novel? Was the novel based on real people? Where does the story
take place?
Option 2: Mention the
pros and cons of S.E. Hinton using her initials instead of her full name. Do you think she tricked people by doing
this? Why did she use her initials? Do you agree with her reasons?
Option 3: Pretend your
job is to draw covers for books. Draw a
cover for a book about S.E. Hinton. What
would you call the book? Before you draw your cover, think about what inspired
her to write the book, how old she was (15) and the topic of the book (gangs).
