Option 1: Author Timeline: WRITE A PARAGRAPH OR MAKE A LIST OF THINGS YOU DURING THIS MONTH'S UNIT ON OF MICE AND MEN.

Option 2: Reflection Essay: Write a reflection about what you learned about homelessness.  Why are there so many homeless people? What are some facts and opinions about the homeless? How can we help?

 
Option 3: Campaign Ads: Draw four events from the novel Of Mice and Men that you liked or disliked.  Write a sentence for each drawing explaining your event.

Option 1: review/revise author timeline project using your notes. Bring revisions and contribution to continue working in class.

Option 2: Prepare for culminating project: research facts about homelessness to make your essay topic stronger.  Revise and review you essay.

Option 3: use your notes (or groups notes) from today’s group work to come up with sample/sketches of drawings to complete culminating project (campaign ad)

Option 1: Write a 4-6 sentence paragraph:
Mention at least three factors why people like George and Lennie and the other characters (or Okies) can become homeless.  Do you believe it this their fault they are homeless? Explain Why or why not?

Option 2: Compare and contrast reasons why people from Lennie and George’s time were homeless to why and how people are homeless today.  Explain why you think they are different or the same.  You may use a Venn diagram to organize your ideas. 

Option 3: Draw two squares on a sheet of paper.  Title one square America 1930’s and the other America’s 2010’s. Show example of how people are homeless now vs then. What is different and what has not changed or is the same.

Topic: Is the American Dream impossible or does it just depend on your dream? 

Option1; People dream of many things: some big and some small, some realistic and others not realistic.  Do you think Goerge and Lennie’s dream are realistic? Explain how?

Option 2: Compare Lennie and George’s dream to Arnold Junior’s dream (Abs, True Diary of Part Time Indian). Who had the more realistic dream? Explain your answer.  What is your dream? Do you think your dream is realistic or not? Explain.

Option 3: Compare and contrast Arnold’s dream to George and Lennie’s.  Draw a t chart . Draw Arnold  and his dream on one side and Lennie and George’s dream  on the other.  On the bottom write down your conclusion: _______________’s dream is more realistic because_____________________.

Option 1:  Do you think the American Dream is possible to attain?  Explain why or why not. Give examples from the novel of characters who have dreams. Do you think their dreams will come true? Why or why not?

Option 2: What is the American Dream? Is it just one dream or many? Can this dream ever come true? What is Lennie and George’s dream? What is yours?

Option 3: Draw a poster of the American Dream. Draw Lennie and George’s dream. Draw what you think this means and what your dream is? Make sure to identify who every character is and what the dream is,

Option 1; Mention 3 characters or groups of people who suffer discrimination in the novel.  For each character or group write one sentence explaining how these characters are discriminated against.

Option 2: Write a paragraph about one character that is discriminated against in the novel.  Explain why and how the character experiences discrimination. Make sure to include examples from the novel.

Option 3: Draw a poster or a banner on a sheet of paper that shows how some characters in Of Mice and Men are being discriminated against.  Include details and names of the characters.

Option 1: Mention 3 characters that are lonely in the novel. For each one write a sentence explaining how this character is lonely.  Make sure to give evidence from the novel.

Option 2: Mention 1 character that is lonely in the novel and write one paragraph explaining why and how this character is lonely.  Make sure to give evidence from the novel.

Option 3: Draw a scene from the novel that shows how one or more characters are lonely. Make sure to include details from the novel in your drawing.

Topic:  How can people be lonely even when they’re around other people?

Option 1:
Write  song lyrics or a poem about the theme of loneliness in Of Mice and Men.  What does it mean to be lonely? Can a person be lonely if they have family and friends? Who is lonely in the story? Do you agree that people who have many friends can still be lonely? Explain

Option 2:
The topics for this week were: Friendship, Being marginalized, Unions and Loneliness.  Now it is time to put everything together.  You can write a poem/song/essay or draw a poster that puts all these parts together.  For example, if you write a song/poem you can mix up the topics. If you write an essay you can discuss what your learned. If you draw you can create a collage.  

Option 3: Draw a cover to a music album named Loneliness. Come up with a name for your artist. When you draw the cover think about the topic we studied.  The details of the drawing should show what you learned about the topic.

Topic: Why was it so hard for people to form unions during George and Lennie’s times (the 1930’s)?

Option 1:
Write a one paragraph essay explaining why it was so hard for people to form unions. Use today’s vocabulary in your paragraph: wage ; cheap labor; employ; exploit; labor. Also, make sure to use at least one example from the text to support your claim.   

Option 2: 
Pretend you are a fed up journalist. You are tired of seeing how Curly abuses the workers on his farm.  You decide to write an article accusing Curly and other men like him.  Write an article stating what it is he does, how he treats the workers, and why you think the workers will not protest or complain.

Option 3:
Draw a poster that shows George, Lennie and Candy protesting about Curley.  They’re signs should use examples of today’s vocabulary words: wage ; cheap labor; employ; exploit; labor.

Topic: How does being marginalized affect people?

Option 1: Write a freestyle response essay where you answer the following questions: What does being marginalized mean? What is a margin? What are some real life examples of people being marginalized? How are George and Lennie marginalized? How can they or other people do not to be marginalized?


Option 2:
On a sheet of paper draw a line from the top to the bottom right down the middle like this:


On one side write words or draw examples of what it means to be marginalized and what is the opposite.   One each side mention one way George and Lennie is marginalized and one example that shows how Curly is not.

Option 3:
Write a poem or song lyrics about what being Marginalized.  Use vocabulary words learned in class for your song/poem. Use the names of characters in the novel as examples of people who are and are not marginalized. Write about how this affects their lives.

Topic: How do you know you have a real friend?

Option 1:
Write a poem or a song about friendship.  To help you write, think about a real experience but instead of using the real names use George , Lennie, Curly, etc. To help you come up with ideas think about these questions discussed in class: What is friendship? What is a friend? What does a friend do? What does a friend not do? What can a friend expect from you and you from a friend?

Option 2:
Draw a poster that shows examples about friendship. Use Lennie and George as the characters of your poster.  Draw images that represent things that friends do for each other.

Option 3: Compare Lennie and George’s friendship to a friendship that you have had. For example, have you ever had a friend that you knew you could always count on?  Or a friendship where you each watched each other’s backs?  How was this friendhip similar and different to Goerge and Lennie?

Option 2:  One day you meet 2 strangers, their names are Lennie and George.  They tell you they are homeless but don’t tell you why.. Write a small paragraph in which you guess how they became homeless.

Option 3: You work for a newspaper. Your job is to design draw an image on the front page to get people’s attention. Create a drawing showing why people were left homeless.
