Homework: Parents/guardians, please assist your child with todays homework.

Read the passage and answer questions below based on what you read and already know about Romeo and Juliet.

Option 1:
Kids these days. They don't respect their parents, they have no morals, and they just run around thinking about romantic relationships, fighting, playing and gossiping.
Sound familiar?
Sure. It also sounded familiar in the 16th century, when Romeo and Juliet was written. Romeo and Juliet's youthful passion conflicts with the values of their feuding parents and their more mature advisors. But who's right? Should Romeo and Juliet have just gone along with their parents, who seemed about ready to put the old feud to rest? Or does it take youthful rebellion to shake things up? And who's most to blame for the tragedy: the kids or the grownups?

Questions About Youth
What values do the young characters emphasize (show) in the play?
What do young and old characters disagree about? Over what? What do different generations disagree about today?
Is Romeo and Juliet's tragedy the fault of the old people or the young people? The values of the old or the values of the young?

Option 2:
Kids these days. They don't respect their parents, they have no morals, and they just run around thinking about romantic relationships, fighting, playing and gossiping.

Do you agree that young people disagree with their parents and older people today? Explain why or why not.
Do you believe young people today are similar to young people from the past? Explain how they might be similar or different.

HW Mr. Padilla 7.7.76

Homework: Dear parents/guardians, please assist your child with today’s homework.

Today we discussed the background of Romeo and Juliet (what the story is about, where it takes, the main characters, etc.) Over the next two weeks we will be stuying Romeo and Juliet, learning about Shakespeare and the times he lived in, and making connections with Romeo and Juliet’s themes and Shakespeare’s time with our times.

Option 1:
The story is set in the late 1500’s mostly in the town of Verona, Italy.  However, there are a few acts set in Mantua, Italy a smaller town just a few miles away. Romeo and Juliet is a story about two teenagers who fall in love but are forbidden to see each other by their parents.  They meet one night at a party (Romeo is actually there to check out another girl, Rosaline) and quickly fall in love.  Unfortunately, Juliet’s parents already have a husband picked out for her. Romeo’s family, the Montagues, have a long standing feud with Juliet’s family, the Capulets.   So, the two decide to get married and enlist the help of Juliet’s nurse to act as a messenger between the two and Friar Laurence who agrees to marry them.  However, plans go awry after Romeo is banished from Verona and doesn’t get filled in on the plans that Juliet has for them to live happily ever after…

Where and when do the story take place?

How do Romeo and Juliet meet?

Why are they forbidden to see each other?

How do Romeo and Juliet continue to see each other? Who helps them and how?

What does awry mean? And how do things go awry?

Option 2:

Romeo and Juliet is set in the late 1500’s, mostly in the town of Verona, Italy…

Romeo and Juliet is a story about two teenagers who fall in love but are forbidden (not allowed) to see each other by their parents.  Romeo and Juliet meet one night at a party …and quickly fall in love.  Unfortunately, Juliet’s parents already have a husband picked out (chosen a husband) for her.  Romeo’s family, the Montagues, have a long standing feud (fight) with Juliet’s family, the Capulets.   So, Romeo and Juliet decide to get married and enlist (get) the help of Juliet’s nurse to act as a messenger between them and Friar (like a priest) Laurence who agrees to marry them.  However, plans go awry (bad) after Romeo is banished (kicked out) from Verona.  Romeo doesn’t get filled in on (he doesn’t find out about) the plans that Juliet has for them to live happily ever after…

Where and when does Romeo and Juliet take place?

What is Romeo and Juliet about?

Why are Romeo and Juliet not allowed to see each other?

Option 3: Base response on what we read in discussed today in class. Write complete sentences. Support your responses with points discussed in class and your reding.

What are some themes in Romeo and Juliet?

Who are the Montagues and Capulets? Why is their feud important in the story?

Explain how Romeo and Juliet is both a comedy and a tragedy?
