Homework:
Parents/please assist your child with today’s
homework.
Objective: to use a graphic organizer to compare two texts.
Read the background passages for Esperanza Rising and Persepolis, then fill the
graphic organizer.
Option 3:
Esperanza
Rising
Twelve-year-old Esperanza Ortega has grown up the daughter
of a wealthy Mexican rancher and his wife. But tragedy strikes: her father is killed,
and her step uncles take over the family home. Esperanza and her mother must
flee their home and journey to a new life in California.
Life in California is nothing like what Esperanza is used
to. She and her mother must live with their former servants in a farm labor
camp.
Persepolis
Marjane Satrapi grew up in Iran… as things started getting
bad. Students were segregated by gender…women's rights receded …and family
members were executed simply because they were suspected to be spies. It's a
rough time to grow up there… but Marjane not only survives protests and
bombings—she moves to Vienna, then back to Iran, and then manages to leave
again.
