HW 6-18-15

Instructions: Read the following quote taken from The Curious Incident of a dog in the Night-time” and then choose a task.

“People say that you always have to tell the truth. But they do not mean this because you are not allowed to tell old people that they are old and you are not allowed to tell people if they smell funny or if a grown-up has made a fart. And you are not allowed to say, "I don't like you," unless that person has been horrible to you. (73.2)”

Option 1: You’ve probably been told many times not to tell lies.  You have also been probably told not to hurt people’s feelings. But what happens if the only way to spare some one’s feelings is to tell a lie? Write about an experience you had where you had to tell a lie or hide the truth to avoid hurting someone’s feelings.

Option 2: Has someone ever told you something about you that was very mean? At the time you might of felt hurt but later you though about it and found what was said about you was true? Share how you felt? You don’t have to say what happened or what was said, but just how you felt and why.

Option 3: Make up a drawing of Christopher having a conversation with someone where he tells someone the truth about anything (for example, that the person is very boring).  Imagine how the other person will feel. Draw this person too. Write what the person might say.

Option 4: We are taught to the tell the truth since we are very young.  Is it always best to tell the truth? Are there occasions where it might be better to not tell the truth? Explain why?

HW Mr. Padilla 6-16-15

Read the passage below and choose a task option below:
And when you look at the sky you know you are looking at stars which are hundreds …. of light-years away from you. And some of the stars don’t even exist anymore because their light has taken so long to get to us that they are already dead, or they have exploded and collapsed … And that makes you seem very small, … it is nice to think that they are what is called negligible, which means they are so small you don’t have to take them into account when you are calculating something.”
Option 1: Christopher is fascinated by science and math.  When he speaks he connect science and math often to express other ideas.  Name a subject or topic that you enjoy a lot.  Why do you enjoy this topic? How does the topic/ subject make you feel? Have you ever used your favorite subject as an example to explain something complicated/ Explain.

Option 2: You are an artist. You love to draw.  Create a drawing that captures Christopher’s quote. Make sure to write one sentence explaining what you draw.

Option 3:  How would you connect this month’s theme: Insensitivities of the Universe to this reading passage?  Make sure to include examples from the reading and previous knowledge.

HW Mr. Padilla June 15th, 15

Read the quote below and choose an option below.

“Also people think they're not computers because they have feelings and computers don't have feelings. But feelings are just having a picture on the screen in your head of what is going to happen tomorrow or next year, or what might have happened instead of what did happen, and if it is a happy picture they smile and if it is a sad picture they cry.”

Option 1: Christopher doesn’t understand feelings. For him a feeling is something that a person can think of.  What do you think? Are feelings "just having a picture on the screen in your head"? Or is something deeper going on?

Option 2: Usually when we talk about feelings, we talk about the heart rather than the head. Do you think about how Christopher places feelings in the mind instead of his heart? What is your view? Explain.

HW Mr. Padilla 6-12-15

Read the passage below and choose an option.

“And if I start thinking about something which didn't happen I start thinking about all the other things which didn't happen.
For example, this morning for breakfast I had … some hot raspberry milk shake. But if I say that I actually had Shreddies and a mug of tea I start thinking about Coco-Pops and lemonade and porridge and Dr. Pepper and how I wasn't eating my breakfast in Egypt and there wasn't a rhinoceros in the room and Father wasn't wearing a diving suit and so on and even writing this makes me feel shaky and scared, like I do when I'm standing on the top of a very tall building and there are thousands of houses and cars and people below me and my head is so full of all these things that I'm afraid that I'm going to forget to stand up straight and hang onto the rail and I'm going to fall over and be killed. (37.3-4)

Often we say that we can’t do something or another. For example, you can say we’re not good at singing or writing but then one day you sing and people will over your voice, or you can write a poem and people might love it, too.
Christopher claims that he has a hard time imagining things that haven't happened to him. But it's clear from this passage that he actually has a pretty incredible imagination.

Option 1: Write about a time when you claimed not to be able to do something and then it turned out you were pretty good at it.  How did you find out you were good? How did it make you feel?

Option 2: In the paragraph we discussed today Christopher talks about breakfast and imagines his father and other things. Draw Christopher having breakfast and the things that Christopher talks about.

Option 3: Follow instructions for option 1 plus compare your experience to Christopher’s. How is similar and different?
